Early experiments by melody-lu Early experiments by melody-lu
Bob, you are such a jerk.

Also, Harry seems like a responsible guy about some things, so I am sure that the answer to Molly's question is that yes, there are SEVERAL fire extinguishers in the apartment (if this is representative of a crappy-but-reasonably normal Sunday afternoon.)

[edit: This is totally chronologically inaccurate. Let's say it's a test-run for the Little Chicago that would eventually be.]

Bob: "See, this is what happens when you try to make Chicago too authentic. It behaves like...well...Chicago. At least you didn't try to make Los Alamos."

This is hilarious (and well drawn).

I can totally see this being a early rendition of the Little Chicago project.

Great job.

I consider this Harry's first attemtp to cast an evocation through LC. Since Cowl did it, Harry was jealous and wanted to try and pull off the same thing. Bob told him his calculations were off, but...

Also, for the record, "Roommates" is now my desktop.

So, wow, I'm pretty much in love with this and every other piece you've posted.

I wound up here while searching for illustrations for a presentation I am putting together; basically, I'm looking for a picture of Harry and book-version Bob to show how much lonelier and more pathetic book-version Harry is at the beginning of the series compared to TV-version Harry (the presentation is actually about how technology and magic interact in various fantasy series, but this is an important part of the argument, it really is. I promise. I'm not quite as raving a loon as I sound.)

ANYway, point is, this painting encapsulates everything I thought I was going to have to try to explain about Harry's pathetic lonerness. Would you mind if I used it in the presentation? I will obviously give you full credit and make sure everyone in attendance knows to come look at your other awesome work.

Hahaha, WOW: you are giving a presentation on technology and magic in fantasy books. Right there, +9,000 points for stone-cold awesome dorkiness, and you have my full support. Go ahead and use anything here! I'm just posting fanart here to make other DF fans happy, so the more the work travels, the better. :)

If you've still got time to dig around for your presentation, I also highly recommend checking out the official graphic novesl (specifically Storm Front); I kind of disagree with the over-the-top-badassness in many of the pages, (dramatic heroic frowns, bulging muscles, etc) but at least a few of the frames really do capture the crappiness of Harry's basement (I only learned about these images *after* drawing this, alas.)

Can I see your powerpoint, when you're done? Nerding out about world-building (magic system, in particular) takes up way too much of my idle conversation time with my posse, and I'd love to hear more about other series :) That said, I'm a hater for the DF-TV series...I stumbled onto a 30 second preview of it on Hulu when I was watching something else and ran away screaming about my burning brain, because....because, damnit I like book canon. DF is some of my favorite POV-character writing, and I don't really want to see it done for TV.

Hullo again! The mysterious "Robin" person who just sent an email to the gmail account listed on your website with a link to a PowerPoint presentation is me. Thanks again for letting me use this painting; there were several people at the presentation who were familiar with Dresden, but there were even more who had no idea what I was talking about, and I think the painting helped them understand the character in a way I wouldn't have been able to do in the limited time I had. Your art is beautiful, amusing, and educational!

I found the first issue of the Fool Moon comic in a bargain bin a while back and didn't get anything out of it that I didn't get from the audiobooks. I can definitely see how Storm Front might be a better graphic novel adaptation, now you mention it, particularly for my purposes. I'll check for it next time I'm at my LCS. Thanks! ^_^

I read an interview where Butcher made one of those gently snarky comments of his about how TV-Harry doesn't seem to have as much trouble with technology, which is why I ended up watching the series. It's fairly decent by the standards of Sci-Fi Channel original programming, provided you treat it as an entirely separate entity from the books, but you definitely aren't missing anything by skipping it. Well, nothing beyond a few opportunities for mildly interesting comparative analysis...but it's highly probable that I'm the only person in the world who is this interested in why they made Bob a ghost who appears in human form, or the implications of casting a Latina actress to play Murphy, then making Susan a blonde.

I will absolutely send you the powerpoint when it is done! Most of the slides are just pretty pictures and clips from audiobooks, but I'm annotating everything, so the file should be mostly coherent on its own (I hope). I'm honestly probably having too much fun with the effects and whatnot, but I *think* I'm keeping it on the stylish side of obnoxious ;^)
A friend and I are giving the presentation at a Harry Potter convention in Chicago in a couple of months, so the powerpoint should be ready sometime in early August. We're obviously covering DF and HP, and will also be talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and one of the books in Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series. It'll be fairly basic because of the huge amount of material we're covering, but I'm hoping to expand parts of it when I start work on my M.A. in the fall.

Meanwhile, I took a quick look around your Blogspot page, and "The Alarious Project" is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Paleontologists can say what the like about deinonychuses (deinonychi?) having plumage and wings; I'm now firmly in the waistcoats and spats camp. Lovely, lovely stuff.

. . . Bob. Just . . . Bob. And the bathrobe. Because real wizards wear robes in cold basements.

This is about everything I love in the Dresden Files summed up in one picture.

I love how you managed to make Bob look a little concerned about Harry's experiment backfiring (hahah) on him.

I don't remember exactly when he made Little Chicago but I do remember the first time he tested it there was an accident of some kind that forced him to make needed improvements
